Anthropology

Students must complete all of the following requirements to graduate with a bachelor of arts in this program. Some courses may apply toward multiple requirements.

College Requirements:

  

Students are required to complete all standard college requirements.

Division Requirements:

  

Students are required to fulfill the division requirements for their major.

Total divisional units: 4

Major Requirements:


Total major units: 9-11, depending on language proficiency

A minimum of one unit in a specific geographic area


A minimum of one unit at the 400 level (excluding 470)


One unit of Junior Seminar


  • See “Junior Year Requirements” below.

Proficiency in a Non-English Language, Demonstrated by One of the Following:


  • Successful completion of Reed language courses:
    ⇒ Two units at a second-year level,
    OR
    ​⇒ One unit at a higher level;
  • Department approval of language courses taken elsewhere, which may include:
    ​⇒ Successful completion of language courses taken in secondary (high) school or at another college/university,
    AND/OR
    ​⇒ ​Successful completion of a language placement examination at Reed;
  • Department approval following an assessment of language proficiency in a non-English language, including heritage languages, commensurate with at least two years of college-level coursework.

Junior Year Requirements:


  • At least five units of anthropology coursework, and as many units of History and Social Sciences divisional requirements as possible, must be completed by the end of the junior year.
  • One unit of junior seminar (included in the “Seven units of anthropology” requirement above), which may be taken either fall or spring semester of the junior year. See the Anthropology  department for more information.

Recommended, but Not Required:


Preferably two units in a specific geographic area.
