International Programs & Off-Campus Study

Curriculum
Reed offers a number of international and domestic programs for students interested in off-campus study. Students considering such study are encouraged to meet with their faculty adviser and the director of international programs to develop a study plan. Students in good academic standing who are approved by the Off-Campus Study Programs Committee (OCSC) for participation in these programs are registered as regular students at the college and are able to use their financial aid for Reed-approved programs. Residence in Reed-approved study-abroad programs does not count toward the college’s two-year residence requirement.
International Programs
ARGENTINA
IES: Emerging Economies: Buenos Aires and Santiago
Duration: semester

In collaboration with the Institute for International Education of Students (IES), this program begins with orientation in Buenos Aires (Argentina), where the first half of the program is held. This is followed by a week-long program-related trip to Peru and the second half of the program in Santiago (Chile). Students will learn about the accelerated pace of globalization and economic growth in these countries while experiencing two very different cultures, complete with their own distinct institutions, laws, and business practices and cultures. Both cities serve as models for the pitfalls and opportunities surrounding economies in transition within the global marketplace.
IES: Latin American Societies & Cultures

In collaboration with the Institute for International Education of Students (IES), the Latin American Societies & Cultures Program is open to students of all language levels. This program allows students to improve Spanish language skills while taking courses in humanities and social sciences, all with an academic emphasis on Latin America. Students combine IES courses with direct enrollment courses at local universities.
IFSA Argentine Universities

In collaboration with the Institute for Study Abroad-Butler University (IFSA), Reed students can create their own academic focus by mixing and matching courses at the following universities: Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), Universidad del Salvador (USAL), and Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (UTDT). All classes are taught in Spanish by Argentine university professors in all disciplines represented in the Reed curriculum.
Universidad de San Andrés

Founded in 1989 by the Scottish community in Argentina and inspired by the pedagogical system of the liberal arts colleges, the Universidad de San Andrés (UdeSA) is a privately owned, not-for-profit institution with academic offerings in various fields. Its mission is to build an academic community of professors, students, and alumni motivated by the search for truth and contributing to progress in Argentina and to the well‐being of its citizens. UdeSA offers Reed students a wide range of social sciences and humanities courses.
Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (UTDT)

The Universidad Torcuato di Tella (UTDT) offers a robust exchange program, hosting students from across the world to study in the vibrant city of Buenos Aires. Founded in 1991, the university is particularly well-known for its offerings in humanities, social sciences, and computer sciences; other notable departments include art, architecture, and international studies. Reed students in the exchange program can take courses in both English and Spanish.

University of Sydney

In collaboration with the Institute for Study Abroad-Butler University (IFSA), Reed students may take advantage of Australia’s most extensive university studies while embracing Australian student life and culture. The University of Sydney boasts a beautiful campus with grassy courtyards and dramatic sandstone buildings in the middle of the city’s most artistic neighborhood. It provides its students with an intimate look at Australia’s most populous city and offers Reed students courses in the liberal arts and humanities, life sciences, and social sciences.
School for Field Studies: Rainforest to Reef

Focused on tropical rainforest studies, the School for Field Studies in Australia is particularly suited to students interested in biology and environmental studies but also offers ample resources and opportunities for students in all disciplines. Students will look at various policies using field research, collaboration with local landholders and environmental organizations, and a student-directed project to explore possibilities for conservation in Australia’s Atherton Tablelands. SFS gives Reed students an interdisciplinary approach to environmental conservation practices, overlapping with questions about public policy, economic analysis of biological resource issues, and direct research projects where students carry out independent fieldwork.
Bhutan
School for Field Studies: Himalayan Environment and Society in Transition

Based in Paro, this program offers students the opportunity to learn about both the conservation of biodiversity and the maintenance of traditional rural life in Bhutan. Students will engage in in-depth fieldwork related to the local ecosystem, and the semester includes a field trip for environmental study. In addition to strong offerings in environmental science and biology, this program provides a unique opportunity for those studying religion to engage with Buddhist philosophy.
Cambodia
School for Field Studies: Environmental Justice and Mekong Ecologies

Through this program, students can learn about threats to ecosystems and natural resources, environmental governance, and the ethics of conservation and development in Cambodia. The semester involves significant travel to the forests in Mondulkiri, mountain ecosystems in Kampot, the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, and key sites along the Mekong River. During the final weeks of the semester, students will conduct an extensive research project in the field.
Chile

Through this program, students can spend a semester in the Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, studying conservation and the effects of climate change in this one-of-a-kind ecosystem. During the final weeks of the semester, students will conduct an extensive research project in the field.
China
Capital Normal University

Capital Normal was founded in 1954 and is ranked consistently among China’s top universities. Students who choose to study in Beijing through Capital Normal University will be directly enrolled without the aid of a liaison program. Intensive Chinese language classes are provided for international students in addition to the general roster of university courses. For students with less experience with the Chinese language, for whom the program serves as an intense introduction, select courses are offered in English.
East China Normal University

Located in Shanghai, East China Normal University provides international students with a direct exchange program geared towards intensive linguistic and cultural integration, as well as the opportunity to live and learn among Chinese university students. Courses are primarily in Chinese; however, there are select courses taught in English, as well as introductory-level Chinese language courses for less experienced students. This program is aimed at students with solid work ethics and self-motivation who are looking for intensive study of the Chinese language.
Fujian Normal University

Language of instruction: Chinese Students studying in Fuzhou through Fujian Normal University will take courses alongside Chinese students and will have full access to all university amenities (library, cafeterias, gymnasium). This program allows students to focus primarily on heavy linguistic immersion and study. Students should be prepared to take courses primarily in Chinese.
Costa Rica
School for Field Studies: Sustainable Development Studies

The School for Field Studies in Costa Rica focuses on land use practices and sustainable development studies. Although it is particularly suited to students interested in biology and environmental studies, this program offers ample resources and opportunities for students in all disciplines. Students are engaged in studying different development and resource management models that include extensive fieldwork, research projects, and trips around the greater area.
Cuba
Sarah Lawrence in Cuba

This unique opportunity is offered to Reed students in conjunction with Sarah Lawrence College. In addition to core program courses, students can take classes with Cuban students at the University of Havana, the Instituto Superior de Artes, and the Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latino-Americano. This program is ideal for students interested in the Spanish language, humanities, social sciences, and the arts.
Czech Republic
New York University Prague

Through the NYU program in Prague, Reed students can study for a semester or year in the capital city of the Czech Republic. Coursework, taught in English, focuses on the political and economic interests of European Union member states and the growing territorial and security interests of the Russian Federation. Areas of study include anthropology, art, literature, German language, Hebrew and Judaic studies, Russian language and Slavic studies, film, photography, journalism, media studies, and music.
Denmark
DIS Copenhagen

DIS Abroad is a nonprofit study abroad foundation established in Denmark in 1959, with locations in Copenhagen and Stockholm. The intellectually challenging curriculum is broad, cutting-edge, and enriched by experiential learning components such as faculty-led study tours across Europe. DIS programs, which are taught in English, focus on a specific academic field or discipline, such as neuroscience, European politics, justice and human rights, psychology, sociology, sustainability, or urban studies.

American University in Cairo

Through this exchange program Reed students can study at the American University in Cairo, a leading English-language, American-accredited institution of higher education and a center of intellectual, social, and cultural life of the Arab world. In addition to courses in Arabic language and Middle Eastern politics, history, and religions, AUC offers a broad array of options in sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
France
The American University of Paris (AUP)

Reed students can study at the AUP, an urban, international liberal arts college located in Paris. This program offers courses entirely in English, making it ideal for students who have not taken a language in college but are interested in learning one abroad. Students can take courses in all disciplines, as well as French classes suited to their level.
CUPA/PCA (Hildegarde Ed)

Language Immersion Program (The Center for University Programs Abroad-CUPA): Language immersion is at the heart of CUPA’s mission. Students take a language placement test upon submission of their application. During their semester or a full academic year, based on their test result, students may take a full load of program-run courses (B1 level required), a combination of program-run and university classes (B2 level required), or a full load of direct-matriculation university classes (B2 level required).
Art & Design Program (Paris College of Arts-PCA): Paris College of Art offers an extraordinary study abroad art and design program for sophomores or juniors who wish to spend a semester or year experiencing the art, design, and culture of Paris. All curriculum embraces Paris as a classroom, with studio and academic work extending beyond the walls of campus into the city’s streets and squares, museums, and galleries. PCA courses are taught in English.
Columbia in Paris-English Program

Through this program facilitated by Columbia University, students can take classes in English at the renowned French University Sciences Po as well as at Reid Hall, Columbia’s global center in Paris. Students will have the opportunity to take one class in French language, with courses offered for levels from beginner to advanced, making this program a good choice for students with limited French experience and a desire to learn more. Additionally, this program offers a wide variety of courses in the social sciences and humanities, with a particular focus on French history and culture.
Sciences Po Lille

Reed students can study at Sciences Po Lille, one of France’s most selective higher education institutions focused on law, humanities, and social sciences (political science, economics, history, and sociology). Located near the border between France and Belgium, Sciences Po Lille gives Reed participants small class settings in which to study wide-ranging topics including journalism, European studies, international relations, and the history and politics of European integration. Approximately half of the courses are taught in English, with the remainder taught in French.

Two primary exchange plans are offered at Lille: one for experienced French speakers, and another for students with little or no French who wish to study the French language intensively as well as taking other courses taught in English. Upon arrival in France, students undergo an expansive 10-day orientation program to assist in immersion and general cultural acclimation. In addition, the university provides several excursions within and outside of the city.
Université Rennes 2

Reed students study at the Université Rennes 2, a comprehensive French university located in Rennes, a beautiful medieval city in Brittany. This program offers Reed students the opportunity to take courses in the social sciences and humanities. Classes are offered in both French and English, meaning that this program is well suited both to students who are seeking French immersion and those that have not studied the language. Students may live on campus or in apartments in the city.
Germany
The Freie Universität Berlin (Direct Exchange)

The Freie Universität Berlin (FU-Berlin), founded in 1948 and internationally recognized for teaching and research, offers regular university courses taught in German as well as the vibrant cultural life of the capital of Germany. Reed students with at least four semesters of college-level German can participate in a direct exchange that enables students from both institutions to exchange places for a semester or full year. Reed participants are provided with general orientation guidance as well as academic advising so they can enroll in courses taught in German at FU-Berlin alongside regular students.
The Freie Universität Berlin (FU-BEST)

Freie Universität Berlin European Studies Program (FU-BEST) offers Reed students without prior German language experience the possibility of taking a German language course at the student’s level as well as four courses taught in English covering a range of subjects across disciplines. Students may live with German host families or in housing arranged by the program. Unlike the other two programs at this university, this option runs on the traditional U.S. semester calendar, thus making it possible for students to study either fall or spring semester.
The Freie Universität Berlin (BCGS Program)

Berlin Consortium for German Studies (BCGS): Reed students with at least four semesters of college-level German can enroll in a broad range of German university courses with the support of a structured program. Students begin with a six-week German Discourse and Culture course, followed by direct enrollment in courses at the Freie in a range of subjects across disciplines. Students begin with a “Guest Stay” housing program with German hosts, followed by shared apartments or residences.
Tübingen University

Reed students can study at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen in Baden Württemberg. Universität Tübingen exchanges students with Reed for a semester or academic year. Founded in medieval times, Tübingen is recognized for its humanities faculties, particularly in philosophy, and offers classes in both English and German, with all university and program activity directed in German.
University of Munich

Reed’s oldest program was established in 1972 with the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, founded in 1472 in Bavaria. This program is operated through Lewis and Clark, runs for a full year, and aims to provide students with enhanced cultural understanding and experiential learning opportunities, such as internships offered in the spring. Students who have completed two years of college-level German or the equivalent take courses taught for the program and at the Universität München in all disciplines offered by Reed.
Greece
College Year in Athens (CYA)

Through this program, Reed students can take advantage of the resources of Athens and Greece and expand their knowledge and understanding of Greece’s fundamental contribution to the development of Western civilization and the world of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Courses are offered through the program and represent the disciplines of archaeology, art history, classical languages, cultural anthropology, Greek literature in translation, history, modern Greek language, philosophy, political science, and religious studies.
Hungary
Aquincum Institute of Technology in Budapest

Eligibility: one course involving programming, one college mathematics course beyond calculus, familiarity with concepts in data structures
Located in Budapest, Hungary, AIT is specifically designed for computer science and software engineering students. AIT offers a curriculum that combines foundational computing courses with innovative courses in entrepreneurship, design, and special topics, including a computer vision course for digital film postproduction and courses in computational biology.
Budapest Semester in Mathematics

The Budapest Semester in Mathematics (BSM) provides a unique opportunity for Reed students in mathematics, statistics, and computer science to spend fall or spring semester in Budapest to study under the tutelage of eminent Hungarian scholar-teachers. The instructors of BSM are members of Eötvös Loránd University, the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. All courses are taught in English, and classes are held in small groups.

Trinity College Dublin-The University of Dublin

Trinity College Dublin, Ireland’s most prestigious university and one of the oldest in Europe, offers a broad array of academic and extracurricular resources. Reed students accepted for study at Trinity College Dublin will take courses in a variety of disciplines of their choice with a primary focus on their major field of study.
Italy
Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (ICCS) in Rome

Eligibility: classics/art history major
The ICCS in Rome was established in 1965 by representatives of 10 American colleges and universities; the number of member institutions has now grown to over 100. This program offers courses in Greek and Latin literature, Italian language, ancient history and archaeology, and ancient art. Students will be able to visit archaeological and cultural sites in person; prospective applicants should take into account their capacity for physical tasks such as walking and climbing.
New York University Florence

Located at La Pietra, a magnificent estate outside the city of Florence, the program offers students an intellectually and culturally rewarding experience centered on coursework in areas including studio art, art history, literature, politics, and the Italian language. The program takes advantage of the extraordinary cultural resources provided by the city of Florence and its strategic position within Italy and Europe.
Syracuse University Florence

The Florence Center offers a broad array of courses taught in English in fields including history, literature, political science, fine and studio arts, architecture, and Italian language and culture. Courses can be taken exclusively at the SUF campus, partly at the SUF campus with additional intensive language and cultural studies at the Centro di Cultura per Stranieri-Università di Firenze, or directly through the University of Florence.
Kazakhstan
Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP)

The American Councils’ Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) provides intensive, immersion-based language instruction in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Hosted by Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU), this program provides approximately 20 hours per week of in-class instruction in Russian grammar, phonetics, conversation, and cultural studies for a semester, summer, or academic year. Participants also complete coursework in the history and culture of Kazakhstan and may elect to enroll in Kazakh language study.
Kenya
School for Field Studies: Wildlife, Water, and Climate Resilience

Students can spend a semester in the world-famous national parks and stunning landscapes of Kenya while studying the country’s diverse wildlife and engaging in hands-on conservation research. The interdisciplinary curriculum is designed to help students discover and understand the complexities of Kenya’s environmental, social, and economic issues.
Kyrgyzstan
American University of Central Asia (AUCA-Bard)

The Bard-AUCA study abroad program offers intellectually adventurous students a unique opportunity to study side by side, in English or Russian, at the region’s most prestigious university.
The Liberal Arts Track offers classes in a wide range of subjects including anthropology, sociology, economics, international comparative politics, and environmental studies in Central Asia. Visiting students can try out new topics or continue their primary course of study in small, seminar-style classes with a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1.
The Russian Language Track is open to students with at least two years of college-level Russian. Students will use Russian in and out of the classroom, in homestays, with student peers, and in daily life. With a rich history and culture of its own, a shared Soviet experience and common customs and cultural traditions that transcend borders, Kyrgyzstan is a fascinating place to study Russian outside of the European context and experience post-Soviet society.
Mexico
IFSA Mérida Universities Program

Through this program, Reed students can study in the city of Mérida, Mexico. Classes are offered through the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán and the Universidad Modelo, covering a wide range of both liberal arts and preprofessional topics. The IFSA program also offers select courses, all taught in Spanish. Through this array of offerings, Reed students can customize an academic focus that fits their needs while experiencing the vibrant city life of Mérida.
Mathematical Sciences Semesters in Guanajuato (MSSG)

The Mathematical Sciences Semesters in Guanajuato (MSSG) has been developed based on CIMAT’s (the Centro de Investigación en Matemáticas) long-standing tradition in interdisciplinary work involving mathematics, statistics, and computer science. All the courses are taught in English in small groups, providing students with opportunities to become involved with ongoing applications, research projects, and undertakings, and to interact with undergraduate and graduate students from diverse fields–all this in the fascinating city of Guanajuato, whose mixture of centuries-old local traditions and events with international projection makes it an oasis for interculturality and an ideal place to explore the vast culture of Mexico.
Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM)

Founded in 1969, the Universidad de Monterrey is a private university located in the Mexican province of Monterrey. The university’s study abroad program offers three possible tracks for exchange students. Reed students studying here can follow a liberal arts track taught primarily in English, as well as a mandatory Spanish language course. They can also take a full course load taught in Spanish. The third track, offered through ILACA-Monterrey, Arts & Culture in Mexico (Independent Liberal Arts Colleges Abroad), offers an English curriculum specifically designed for art students.
Morocco
Al Akhawayn University

The university’s residential campus is in the community of Ifrane, in the Atlas Mountains, not far from Fez. Al Akhawayn University is a private institution with vibrant on-campus activities and extracurriculars. Reed students may study intensive Arabic as well as other courses in areas of arts and humanities taught in English.
Morocco Regional Area Study with Lewis and Clark College
Duration: spring semester only, offered in even years
Language of instruction: Arabic, English
This program, delivered in collaboration with Lewis and Clark College, focuses on the history, culture, and social dynamics of Morocco and is held in the spring semester in three different cities: Marrakesh, Agadir, and Fez. Students will have a host family experience and can take courses including Arabic language, architecture and urban landscape, and women and gender relations.
The Netherlands
Amsterdam University College (AUC)

Based in the global city of Amsterdam and offering a liberal arts and sciences curriculum in collaboration with major research institutions Vrije Universiteit and the Universiteit Amsterdam, AUC offers Reed students the opportunity to take courses in English across disciplines in sciences, social sciences, and humanities with a diverse and highly international student body. Through collaboration among the three institutions, students will be able to study and participate in research projects focused on an array of contemporary projects, particularly in environmental sciences.
Panama
School for Field Studies: Tropical Island Biodiversity Studies

In this program, students spend a semester in the dynamic community of Bocas del Toro, where they can study the impacts of tourism and development on the island system’s unique habitats, evaluate local environmental policies, and apply the principles of sustainability and conservation to a research project. Students will visit different ecosystems and communities, which may include coral reefs, tropical rainforests, coastal forests, and beaches, Indigenous Ngöbe communities, island ecosystems, coffee farms, and cloud forests in the Chiriquí Highlands, Panama City, and the Panama Canal.
Peru
School for Field Studies: The Living Amazon

In the Peruvian Amazon region, students explore biological diversity and conservation, ecological interactions, and the value of ecosystem services, as well as the effects of climate change and land use on regional and global biodiversity and human well-being.
Spain
Reed College Barcelona Universities Program (BUP)

At this unique exchange program, Reed students can choose to study at three major universities in Barcelona: the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra de Barcelona (UPF). All three of Reed’s partner universities consistently appear among the top-ranking universities in Spain, often as the top three. Courses are offered in a wide variety of disciplines covering almost all majors at Reed, and can be taken in both English and Spanish. BUP allows students significant flexibility in their studies and a high level of independence.
Through robust agreements with partner universities, Reed sustains its commitment to the highest standards of scholarly practice, critical thought, and creativity. Reed has both a program director and a manager in Barcelona who offer students ongoing support throughout the process, from program application and academic advising, to pre-departure and arrival orientation, to an end-of-term reentry session, aimed to help the readjustment to Reed after studying abroad. Students in Barcelona also have monthly activities included in the program, such as cultural events and social activities, overnight trips to other places in Spain, and day trips near Barcelona.
CIEE Advanced Liberal Arts/Liberal Arts Programs in Seville

The Liberal Arts and Advanced Liberal Arts programs, administered by CIEE Seville, offer Reed students the opportunity to take courses at the Universidad de Sevilla (US), the Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO), or the EUSA School of Communications. Courses are offered in all disciplines represented in the Reed curriculum, and particularly complement studies in the sciences, arts, literature, media, and politics.
Hamilton College’s Academic Year in Spain (Madrid)

Students also have the opportunity to enroll directly in the Madrid University system.
Middlebury School in Spain

Under the auspices of Middlebury College, Reed students can study in one of four Spanish universities in Córdoba (Universidad de Córdoba), Getafe (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), Logroño (Universidad de la Rioja), or Madrid (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). In addition to Spanish literature, history, and culture, courses can include work in a variety of other disciplinary areas that complement the Reed academic program.

DIS Stockholm

DIS Abroad is a nonprofit study abroad foundation established in Denmark in 1959, with locations in Copenhagen and Stockholm. The intellectually challenging curriculum is broad, cutting-edge, and enriched by experiential learning components such as faculty-led study tours across Europe. DIS programs, which are taught in English, focus on a specific academic field or discipline, such as neuroscience, European politics, justice and human rights, psychology, sociology, sustainability, or urban studies.
Taiwan
National Cheng Kung University in Tainan-Chinese Language Center

The Chinese Language Center, founded in 1956, teaches Chinese as a second language to 1,700 students from 70 different countries during each academic year. Reed students will join small classes of students from beginner to advanced who share a common goal of wishing to communicate in Chinese and learn more about Chinese history and culture. Students live and study in Tainan, the oldest city in Taiwan.
National Taiwan University-International Chinese Language Program

This intensive language program provides Reed students the opportunity to study the Chinese language through training in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in both old and new Chinese characters. Students will be placed in classes of three or four students of comparable language backgrounds and will have the opportunity to participate fully in the cultural life of Taiwan in the capital city of Taipei.
Tanzania
School for Field Studies: Wildlife Management Studies

This program’s curriculum and research focus on how changes in land use and resource availability in the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem of Tanzania can be managed to foster the well-being of local communities while safeguarding and promoting biodiversity conservation. Students learn about the socioeconomic, policy, and environmental drivers and implications of demographic change and land reform for wildlife conservation and rural development. Students will hear lectures by park wardens, wildlife veterinarians, and field researchers and interview Maasai community members about the challenges they face with the rapid loss of natural resources.

Boğaziçi University

Through this exchange, Reed students can study at the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. BU was founded in 1863 and offers study in a wide variety of disciplines in the areas of science, social science, and humanities. Reed students will take regular classes taught in English with students from Turkey, the region, and around the world. This elite, highly selective university will allow Reed students to take courses of their choice, including those that focus on the topics of the Middle East.
Turks and Caicos
School for Field Studies: Marine Resource Studies

Through this program, students with an interest in marine biology and environmental studies may spend a semester learning how to conduct field research in Southern Caicos. Students will be working with the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) and the National Park Service, researching in (and outside of) 33 different Marine Protected Areas, studying ecological habitats, the effects of fishing and tourist presence, and biodiversity, and developing important field research skills such as data collection and analysis (as well as snorkeling and scuba abilities). Students will interact with local communities through program-organized service, including teaching local youths how to swim and conducting English lessons.

Middlebury College Oxford Humanities Program: Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies

This program offers an academically rigorous curriculum of reading seminars, field research, and Oxford’s traditional one-on-one tutorials. Its affiliation with Keble College and central location amidst the historic university provide multiple opportunities for students to engage in Oxford’s academic and cultural life. Rooted in the humanities, the program welcomes applicants from all academic disciplines.
Sarah Lawrence College: London Theatre Program

This program gives students an opportunity to work and study with leading actors and directors from the world of British theatre. Through a combination of classes, tutorials, master classes, and performances, students take part in Britain’s great theatrical tradition. The British American Drama Academy (BADA) will also offer “Shakespeare in London,” a semester program that focuses on Shakespeare’s plays and takes full advantage of the opportunity to see a considerable number of these works in performance in London and also at Stratford-upon-Avon. While Shakespeare’s plays are studied principally in the classroom, they are also explored in performance both on stage and in the rehearsal room.

Students can spend an academic year as associate students at Oxford University. The emphasis of this program is on the Oxford tutorial, combined with a core seminar, university lectures, and a complete range of social, cultural, and athletic privileges at Wadham College. In addition to the core seminar focused on British history, students take two tutorials in an array of disciplines in the arts and humanities, as well as psychology, physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, and neurology.

Sea Education Association (SEA)

At the Sea Education Association (SEA), founded in 1971 at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and affiliated with Boston University, undergraduates may study the ocean from a multitude of academic perspectives. Coursework focuses on maritime studies, nautical science, and oceanography and includes six weeks of applied studies aboard a sailing vessel.
Arabic Language and Culture Course

These introductory Arabic and intermediate Arabic courses will be offered online in the fall and spring semesters. All classes will be taught by the faculty of the Center for Language and Culture (CLC), located in Marrakesh, Morocco. These virtual lessons will be supported by in-person meetings with our on-campus Arabic language scholar.
Non-approved Programs
In addition to the formal programs described above, Reed students can participate in various other study programs sponsored by a foreign university, an American higher education institution program abroad, or a study abroad third-party provider. To study abroad in a Reed non-approved program, a special petition process is available to students who can document a strong academic rationale for wanting to study abroad in a program other than those provided through Reed. Students hoping to study abroad in a non-approved program should meet with their faculty adviser and the International Programs Office director to discuss possibilities.
