Students must complete all of the following requirements to graduate with a bachelor of arts in this program. Some courses may apply toward multiple requirements.

College Requirements:

Degree Requirements

Students are required to complete all standard college requirements.

Major Requirements:

Total major units: 10-12

Two units at the 100 level in different religious traditions.
REL 201 - Theories and Methods in the Study of Religion
Four additional units in a minimum of two different religious traditions
⇒A minimum of three at the 300 level or higher (excluding 402 and 470)

Proficiency in a Non-English Language, Demonstrated by One of the Following:

Successful completion of Reed language courses:
⇒ Two units at a second-year level,
OR
⇒ One unit at a higher level;
Department approval of language courses taken elsewhere, including:
⇒ Successful completion of language courses taken in secondary (high) school or at another college/university,
AND/OR
⇒ Successful completion of a language placement examination at Reed;
Department approval following an individual assessment of language proficiency

Junior Year Requirements:

REL 402 - The Junior Seminar in Religion
Junior qualifying examination

Thesis

REL 470 - Thesis

Recommended, but Not Required:

The department recommends students study the sacred or scriptural language of a religion in which they are especially interested.
