POL 320 - Politics and Society in Latin America This course combines normative theory, empirical research, and a historical perspective to examine key issues in Latin American politics critically. The topics covered in the class include 1) transitions from authoritarianism to democracy, 2) democratic consolidation and its challenges, 3) poverty and distribution, 4) inequality and the quality of democracy, 5) gender and political representation, 6) the resurgence of the left, and 7) the rise of competitive authoritarianism. The course focuses on the cases of Chile and Argentina. It also reviews politics and political events in several other countries in the region.
