LING 312 - Topics in Linguistic Analysis Topics vary.
Second Language Phonetics and Phonology
The sound system of a language, its phonetics and phonology, is one of the challenging aspects of second language (L2) learning. This course explores how speakers learn and use the sound systems of a new language. We will examine how learners perceive and produce new sounds, how their first language influences their second, and how multiple sound systems are represented and processed in the mind. These questions connect with major theoretical issues in phonetics, phonology, and language acquisition, as well as cognitive science, biology, and even philosophy. Students will engage closely with primary research articles, discuss both classic and current findings, and gain hands-on experience with experimental design and basic data analysis.
