ART 180 - Form and Space This introductory studio course explores the fundamentals of three-dimensional form and space through hands-on investigation of sculptural materials and techniques. Throughout the term, we will use a range of materials and methods to study and build new relationships with spatial and physical phenomena including shape, balance, joint, scale, body, light, and motion. A core goal of the course is to develop students’ capacities to see, interpret, and create interesting work out of the technical processes and magical possibilities intrinsic to sculptural methods of negotiating physical/material forms and spatial problems. Students are introduced to woodworking and/or metalworking, casting and moldmaking, and related methods. In addition to furnishing experience in fundamental sculpture techniques and spatial practice, this course will prepare students to enroll in more advanced sequences in sculpture, design, socially/environmentally engaged art, and more.
