THEA 329 - Special Topics in Stage Design

This is an advanced stage design course focusing each semester on a different area or topic related to stage design.

Collaborative Costume Design
We will examine the costume designer’s responsibilities as an artist and collaborator and explore the relationship among text, concept, and production as we undertake costume design projects throughout the semester. We will develop research, communication, and rendering skills as applied to the collaborative process of costume design. Discussions will include fabrication materials, performative movement, character and emotion, fashion, and pure visual expression as we work to create designs for clothing for text-based performances.

Scenic Art
This course is an introduction to scenic painting and other scenic art techniques. Students in this course study both traditional and contemporary methods of scenic painting and explore the unique tools and techniques used by scenic artists. Basic techniques in scenic painting, color theory, drawing, using nontraditional tools and materials, foam carving, and finishes will all be explored in the course.
