Comparative Race and Ethnicity Studies with a Concentration in English

Students must complete all of the following requirements to graduate with a bachelor of arts in this program. Some courses may apply toward multiple requirements.

Students are required to complete all standard college requirements.

Major Requirements:


This major requires a curriculum proposal with a course plan approved by the CRES committee and the advisor in the department of concentration.

Total major units: 15-17

Two Disciplinary Units from Distribution Group I:


Two Disciplinary Units from Distribution Group II:


One unit from the following CRES-foundational or CRES-designated courses (CRES-foundational courses cross-listed as “CRES”):


One additional unit in the same subject as above


One additional CRES-foundational unit from:


Five Units of English, Including:


A minimum of three CRES-Foundational or CRES-Designated English units:


Two units of English at the 200 level or higher (excluding 470) in different genres


Two units of English in pre-1900 literature


  • A minimum of one in literature prior to 1700

A minimum of two units of literature not in translation. May be met by fulfilling the two units from Distribution Group I (above) with literature not in translation.


One Unit from the Arts Division (Art, Music, Dance, Theatre)

CRES explicitly focuses on the comparative study of race and ethnicity across borders and boundaries. Consequently, the committee strongly recommends as many of the following as possible:

  • Proficiency in a non-English language.
  • One or more units of CRES courses with an explicit comparative/transnational element.
  • Study abroad.
