International Affairs with a Concentration in Anthropology

Students must complete all of the following requirements to graduate with a bachelor of arts in this program. Some courses may apply toward multiple requirements.

College Requirements:

  

Students are required to complete all standard college requirements.

Major Requirements:


Total major units: 15-20

This program requires an application to declare the major, approved by the ICPS IA/PP committee. The application should include at least one and ideally more than one recomended Comparative Analysis course (listed at bottom).

Six to Seven Units of International Affairs:


One Unit of International Relations:


Three to Four Units of International Affairs from One of the Following Subjects:


History

Political Science

One to Two Additional Units of International Affairs from the Following, in a Different Subject Than Used Above:

Political Science

Six Units of Anthropology:


Proficiency in a Non-English Language, Demonstrated by One of the Following:


  • Successful completion of Reed language courses:

    ​⇒ Two units at a second-year level,

    OR

    ​⇒ One unit at a higher level;
  • Committee approval of language courses taken elsewhere, which may include:

    ​⇒ Successful completion of language courses taken in secondary (high) school or at another college/university,

    AND/OR

    ​⇒ Successful completion of a language placement examination at Reed;
  • Committee approval following an assessment of language proficiency in a non-English language, including heritage languages, commensurate with at least two years of college-level coursework.

Junior Year Requirement:


  • One unit of junior seminar (included in the “Six units of anthropology” requirement above), which may be taken either fall or spring semester of the junior year. See the Anthropology department for more information.

  • Junior qualifying examination

Two Units of Thesis


Recommended, but not Required


  • One additional unit of Anthropology in a specific geographic area
