Comparative Race and Ethnicity Studies with a Concentration in History

Major Requirements:
This major requires a curriculum proposal with a course plan approved by the CRES committee and the advisor in the department of concentration. Total major units: 14-16, depending on language proficiency Two Disciplinary Units from Distribution Group I:

Chronological requirement:

Geographic requirement:
A minimum of one unit from four of the following geographic areas: - Transregional, world, global
- Africa and the Middle East
- Asia
- Europe
- Latin America
- The United States, Canada
One unit of Junior Seminar in History:
Proficiency in a non-English language, demonstrated by one of the following:
- Successful completion of Reed language courses:
⇒ Two units at a second-year level,
OR
⇒ One unit at a higher level; - Committee approval of language courses taken elsewhere, which may include:
⇒ Successful completion of language courses taken in secondary (high) school or at another college/university,
AND/OR
⇒ Successful completion of a language placement examination at Reed; - Committee approval following an individual assessment of language proficiency.
One Additional Unit of Junior Year Requirements
- CRES 300 - Junior Seminar
- One unit of junior seminar in history (included in the “Six units of history” requirement above)
- Junior qualifying examination in history
Recommended but Not Required:
CRES explicitly focuses on the comparative study of race and ethnicity across borders and boundaries. Consequently, the committee strongly recommends as many of the following as possible: - One or more units of CRES courses with an explicit comparative/transnational element.
- Study abroad.
