Divisional Requirements: Literature and Languages

Divisional Requirements
- One unit in the Division of the Arts: art (ART), dance (DANC), music (MUS), or theatre (THEA).
- Two units in literature outside the major, either in the original language or in translation: comparative literature (CMPL), English (ENG), literature (LIT), or a literature class taught in the original language (ANME, CHIN, FREN, GER, GRK, LAT, RUSS, SPAN). The course description indicates the department with which a LIT course is cross-listed, to determine if the course is outside the major department. Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean studies majors may satisfy the division requirement with two units of 300-level literature in their second classical language.
Divisional Recommendations
- Two units from HUM 211 , HUM 212 , HUM 221 , HUM 222 , HUM 231 , and HUM 232 .
- Transfer students should take a language placement test at the time of their first registration.
- Students who wish to take a course in literary theory may wish to consider LIT 400 . Other courses with a strong emphasis on literary theory include ENG 333 and GER 391 /LIT 343 .
