Anthropology with a Concentration in Science Environment and Technology Studies

Total major units: 13-19, depending on language and mathematics proficiency

• Successful completion of Reed language courses:
  ⇒ Two units at a second-year level,
  OR
  ​⇒ One unit at a higher level;
• Department approval of language courses taken elsewhere, which may include:
  ⇒ Successful completion of language courses taken in secondary (high) school or at another college/university, 
  AND/OR
  ​⇒ Successful completion of a language placement examination at Reed;
• Department approval following an assessment of language proficiency in a non-English language, including heritage languages, commensurate with at least two years of college-level coursework.

• A minimum of 2.5 units taken at Reed
• A minimum of four units from a minimum of two of the subjects listed below:
  ⇒Biology
  ⇒Chemistry
  ⇒Computer science
  ⇒Physics
  ⇒Mathematics or statistics
  • For Mathematics:
    • Mathematics Proficiency, Demonstrated by One of the Following:
      • MATH 111 - Calculus 
      • OR
      • Departmental waiver of one unit in cases where the student has demonstrated proficiency

• One to two additional units from the list below in one of the same subjects used above:
  • ​BIOL 211 - Introduction to Scientific Literature and Discourse or higher
  • CHEM 201 - Organic Chemistry I or higher 
  • CSCI 351 - Software Engineering or higher
  • PHYS 202 - Modern Physics or higher
  • Mathematics or statistics
    ⇒Mathematics: 300 level Mathematics or higher
    ⇒Statistics:
    • One of: MATH 241, MATH 243, MATH 343, MATH 391, MATH 392 
    • One additional statistics course from: ECON 311, ECON 312, POL 311, SOC 311 

• One unit of junior seminar (included in the “Seven units of anthropology” requirement above), which may be taken either fall or spring semester of the junior year. See the Anthropology department for more information.
