Literature and Languages 

Students are required to fulfill the division requirements for their major.

Total divisional units: 3

Major Requirements:

Total major units: 9-10, depending on language proficiency

Spanish Language Proficiency, Demonstrated by One of the Following:

  • Successful completion of SPAN 212 or SPAN 312 at Reed
  • Department approval of a course equivalent to SPAN 212 or SPAN 312 taken at another college/university
  • Successful placement into SPAN 321 from a language placement examination at Reed
  • Department approval following an individual assessment of language proficiency

Six Units of Spanish Literature at the 300 level or Higher (Excluding 470)

  • A minimum of two in Peninsular Spanish literature
    ⇒A minimum of one in pre-twentieth-century texts
  • A minimum of two in Spanish American literature,
    ⇒A minimum of one in pre-twentieth-century texts.

One Unit of Junior Year Requirements:

  • One unit of junior seminar
  • Junior qualifying examination
