Declaration of Major

The specific requirements for Reed’s established majors are provided in the Programs  area of this Catalog.

Declaration of Major Deadlines

All students are required to submit a declaration of major by the deadlines provided in this section of the Catalog in order to avoid a hold on their continued registration.

The declaration of major is typically completed and submitted before the end of the student’s 4th semester, i.e. before the end of a student’s 2nd (sophomore) year. Students MUST declare a major once they have a total of 16 or more earned and in-progress units - NOT including units earned via Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and other Pre-Matriculation Credit. (See Transfer Credit for First Year Students under Transfer Credit .) Students who meet this criteria will not be allowed to register for subsequent semesters until they declare a major. First Year students who earn 16 or more units by the end of their 2nd semester must declare a major before the end of their 3rd semester. Transfer students who start at Reed with 16 or more units of transfer credit must declare a major before the end of their 1st semester at Reed.

Required Approvals & Materials

Declarations of major require approval from a faculty member in the major field. (If they are not already, this faculty member will become the student’s academic adviser.) A course plan for graduation must accompany the declaration. Some departments/committees and situations require that additional approvals and materials accompany the declaration. (See Established Interdisciplinary Majors, Ad Hoc Interdisciplinary Majors, and Double Majors below.) Consult with the Registrar’s Office and appropriate department and/or program committee chair before submitting a declaration.

Established Interdisciplinary Majors

An established interdisciplinary major integrates coursework from two or more established major programs at Reed into a defined curriculum. Many established interdisciplinary majors require that additional approvals and/or materials accompany the declaration. Consult with the Registrar’s Office and appropriate program committee chair before submitting a declaration for one of the Interdisciplinary Programs .

Ad Hoc Interdisciplinary Major

An ad hoc interdisciplinary major is a student-initiated program, developed in consultation with faculty, that combines substantial coursework from two or more established major programs at Reed into a structured curriculum not otherwise available by Reed’s established majors.

A statement of rationale for an ad hoc interdisciplinary major must accompany the declaration of major. Approvals from advisers in each department/committee and the chair of each department/committee are required.

Double Majors

A double major must fulfill the requirements of two separate established majors at Reed. Students must meet all requirements for both majors, including a thesis in both majors.

A declaration for each major is required. A statement of rationale for a double major must accompany the declarations. Approvals from advisers in each department/program committee and the chair of each department/program committee are required. The completed declarations and statement of rationale must be submitted for approval to the academic division(s) represented in the double major. Finally, the completed declarations, statement of rationale, and divisional approval(s) must be submitted for approval to the Administration Committee via a Petition for Waiver of Academic Policy

If a student succeeds in satisfying all degree requirements, but the major requirements for only one of the two declared majors, the degree will be awarded with only the completed major.
